New Web Course: How the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Applies to Addiction and Recovery

The New England ADA Center just launched a new web course, ‘How the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Applies to Addiction and Recovery’. The course is free, and continuing education credits are available.

Course Title: How the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Applies to Addiction and Recovery

Description: There are thousands of people with addiction to alcohol and in recovery from opioids and other drugs unaware of their civil rights under the ADA. This free, self-paced web course provides an overview on how the ADA applies to alcohol and substance use disorders using illustrative scenarios, short quizzes, a final exam, and a certificate of completion.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the ADA’s definition of disability and how it applies to addiction and recovery.

2. Distinguish how the ADA applies to people with addiction to alcohol, and those in recovery from opioids and other drugs. 

3. Learn about ADA protections in: employment, state and local government services, non-profit organizations and businesses.

4. Understand civil rights protections for people utilizing medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), and barriers to treatment and recovery.

Who Should Take This Course?

Persons of all education levels such as: addiction counselors, peer coaches, social workers, behavioral health and human service workers, human resource personnel, disability rights, advocates, and health care professionals.  As well as individuals with addiction and in recovery, their family members and friends. In addition, organizations can learn about their responsibilities under the ADA such as: employers, state and local government, for-profits, non-profits.

Continuing Education Credits

The National Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC), the ADA Coordinator Training Certification Program (ACTCP), the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC), and the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).
