Fair Housing Accessibility Guidelines: Supplemental Notice and Special Topics

Fair Housing Accessibility FIRST Training Event

DATE: Tuesday, June 16, 2026

TIMES: 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM (Eastern Time) – OR – 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM (Eastern Time)

Description:

This 90-minute Fair Housing Accessibility FIRST (FHAF) training provides a comprehensive overview of the Supplement to the Notice of Fair Housing Accessibility Guidelines and several key special topics frequently raised by designers, developers, and housing professionals. Participants will learn how HUD’s supplemental questions and answers clarify scoping and technical specification recommendations for accessible design and construction, as well as how these interpretations support compliance in real-world projects.

The session also introduces the DOJ–HUD Joint Statement on Reasonable Accommodations, explaining the rights and obligations of individuals with disabilities and housing providers, the reasonable accommodation request process, and common areas of confusion. Practical examples help illustrate how these guidance documents apply in the field.

An accessibility subject matter expert (SME), Eric Contreras, will be available during the dedicated Q&A portion to answer design and construction accessibility questions.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • identify FHA compliance guidance in the Supplemental Notice,
  • understand how HUD’s clarifications improve interpretation of scoping and technical specifications,
  • recognize the purpose and practical applications of the DOJ–HUD Joint Statement,
  • define reasonable accommodation and fundamental alteration,
  • outline the full process for reviewing, approving, denying, or negotiating accommodation requests,
  • determine what inquiries and documentation may be sought while remaining compliant with the Act,
  • understand the implications of delays or failures to act promptly, and more.

This training offers:

  • one hour of focused training on the Fair Housing Act
  • knowledge checks to strengthen memory and understanding
  • 30+ minute live Q&A session with accessibility expert Eric Contreras
