Description:
This 90-minute Fair Housing Accessibility FIRST (FHAF) training provides a practical overview of the Fair Housing Act’s requirements for ensuring accessible access to recreational facilities in multifamily housing. Participants will learn how FHA Requirements 1 and 2 apply to outdoor and indoor amenity spaces, including accessible routes, entrances, and key interior features that support full use and enjoyment by residents and guests with disabilities. The session highlights common design considerations for planning public and common-use recreational areas, the role of visitability, and strategies for integrating inclusive, user-friendly community spaces. Attendees will also gain an understanding of reasonable modification requests related to recreational facilities.
An accessibility Subject Matter Expert (SME), Eric Contreras, will be available during the dedicated Q&A portion to answer design and construction accessibility questions.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- identify the provisions for access to recreational facilities,
- identify the protections of the FHA and standards used to comply with the Act,
- identify the importance of planning access to public and common use recreational spaces,
- recognize the provisions in Requirement 1 that apply to covered recreational facilities,
- recognize the provisions in Requirement 2 that apply to covered recreational facilities,
- understand the required interior features of accessible recreation spaces, and
- recognize the purpose and process for a reasonable modification request.
