Accessible Areas: Parking
Fair Housing Accessibility FIRST Training Event
DATE: Tuesday, July 7, 2026
TIMES: 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM (Eastern Time) – OR – 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM (Eastern Time)
Description:
This 90-minute Fair Housing Accessibility FIRST (FHAF) training provides a comprehensive overview of accessible parking requirements under the Fair Housing Act (FHA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Participants will learn how FHA Requirements 1 and 2 shape accessible parking design, including the relationship between parking spaces, access aisles, curb ramps, and accessible routes leading to building entrances and common-use areas.
The session covers resident and visitor parking, signage and markings, dimensions for car and van spaces, and common design issues that can affect compliance. Practical examples help clarify how safe harbors and other accessibility guidance apply to parking layout decisions and reasonable accommodation requests. Attendees will gain actionable insights to support compliant, user-friendly accessible parking.
An accessibility subject matter expert (SME), Eric Contreras, will be available during the dedicated Q&A portion to answer design and construction accessibility questions.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- identify the design and construction requirements for accessible parking under FHA Requirements 1 and 2,
- understand FHA coverage and the role of safe harbors,
- recognize technical specifications for accessible spaces, access aisles, curb ramps, signage, markings, and other required elements,
- determine minimum resident and visitor parking counts,
- understand reasonable accommodation responsibilities for providing accessible parking,
- and identify strategies to design fully compliant parking areas and more.
This training offers:
