A major vacation rental platform is working to make it easier for travelers with disabilities to find accommodations that meet their needs.
Vrbo said this month that it is adding eight new accessibility attributes to its search.
The company is also partnering with Becoming rentABLE, a separate platform that specializes in accessible rentals, to encourage hosts to make their properties more accessible.
“Our mission is to power global travel for everyone, everywhere and that includes travelers with disabilities, a growing yet wildly underserved market. Together with Becoming rentABLE, we’re hoping to educate hosts about the moral value, but also the business value of making small changes that deliver big impacts for this audience,” said Tim Rosolio, vice president of vacation rental partnerships at Vrbo.
Previously, travelers could search for properties on Vrbo based on whether they feature wheelchair accessibility or elevators. Now, they can also use filters to find properties that are on a single level, have a stair-free path to enter, accessible parking, an accessible pool, handrails in the stairway or hallway, an entrance ramp, an accessible path of travel or accessible van parking.
Vrbo is also offering a 10-minute online course created with Becoming rentABLE with tips for hosts on how to include accessibility features in their properties. The course highlights “practical guidance” on inclusive design and overlooked opportunities and emphasizes the need to provide accurate and detailed information about accessibility offerings, Becoming rentABLE said.
“Vrbo will track engagement, filter usage and host upgrade metrics to guide future partnership opportunities and improve inclusivity for travelers with disabilities,” Rosolio said.
