Updated: November 9, 2023

Veterans with disabilities related to their service in the armed forces are eligible for many federal benefit programs. Health Benefits for Veterans

All enrolled Veterans have access to the Basic Medical Benefits Package for Veterans. This program provides medical benefits, including primary, specialty care, and preventive services, and in some cases dental care. Eligible Veterans can apply for these benefits on the VA healthcare website.

Caregiver Programs and Services are available for eligible Veterans and their families. This program provides training to help with caregiving for Veterans through the following services:

  • Monthly stipend
  • Travel expenses (including lodging and per diem while accompanying Veterans undergoing care)
  • Access to health care benefits program (if the caregiver is not already entitled to care or services under a health care plan)
  • Mental health services and counseling
  • Comprehensive VA caregiver training provided by Easter Seals
  • Respite Care (not less than 30 days per year)

Access to Mental Health Services and treatment are also available for a range of conditions.

Homelessness Resources for Veterans

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Homeless Programs and VA Assistance to Help Avoid Eviction to help veterans and their families.

The Homeless Veterans Assistance Center can help you find housing, employment, and health and mental health services. You don’t need to apply to use the assistance center. Call the center at 1-877-424-3838 or visit the Veterans Crisis Line website to chat online with an agent. Both options are available 24 hours a day.

The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans has information and resources to help locate community-based organizations for veterans experiencing homelessness.

Home Loans and Compensatory Benefits

Veterans’ Compensation for Service-Connected Disabilities provides eligible Veterans with a monthly, tax-free payment. The amount of the payment is determined based on the degree of your disability. To find out if you are eligible, review the conditions provided by the VA. If you are eligible, you may apply online. The Veterans Pension program provides financial benefits but does not require a service-connected disability. The VA Home Loan Program can help you get a home loan with a guaranteed percentage of the loan for a down payment.

Additional Housing Assistance Resources

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has information and a look-up tool that helps renters and landlords find emergency rental assistance (ERA) in their area.

The United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) has information including: Step by Step Voting Guide for People Experiencing Homelessness, Step-by-Step Guide for People At Risk of Eviction and Resources to Get Help for Homelessness.
