This 90-minute virtual training is the second part of a two-session technical overview of the Fair Housing Act’s design and construction requirements. Building on Part 1, this session provides a deeper examination of the FHA’s remaining technical requirements, including the detailed design and construction standards that apply to accessible routes, usable kitchens and bathrooms, environmental controls, and reinforced walls for grab bars. Participants will explore how safe harbors are applied across these requirements and review practical strategies for achieving compliance from design through final inspection. The material is structured for architects, builders, inspectors, and other technical professionals, yet remains accessible to all stakeholders seeking a stronger understanding of FHA accessibility. An accessibility [subject matter expert or] SME, Eric Contreras, will be available during the dedicated Q&A portion to answer design and construction accessibility questions.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to identify the FHA design and construction requirements and technical guidance provided to developers, designers, property owners, residents, and other stakeholders involved with accessible housing, identify the technical requirements of the FHA, identify the safe harbors used for compliance, identify the design and construction standards used to comply with Requirements 3 through 7 of the Fair Housing Act, and identify strategies for compliance.
