This presentation explores the neuroscience and genetics of addiction in an easy-to-understand, teachable way that focuses on the neurodevelopmental and executive functioning effects of substance use disorders and co-occurring genetic issues.

Presenter:
Crystal Collier, PhD, LPC-S, herself a person in long-term recovery, is a therapist and educator whose comprehensive prevention model, which teaches the neurodevelopmental effects of risky behavior to students, school staff, and families, was selected for the Prevention and Education Commendation from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Collier received the Torch Bearer Award from the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals, Outstanding Research Award from the Association of Alternative Peer Groups and was voted Counselor of the Year by the Houston Counseling Association. Collier’s book, The NeuroWhereAbouts Guide, just received two National Indie Publishing Awards for Best Interior Design and Education book. Her FOO Mapping workbook published in 2023, is designed for people who want to map the neurodevelopmental family-of-origin patterns that no longer serve them.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe the two structural changes in the brain when exposed to high levels of dopamine.
  • Participants will be able to summarize how genetics factor into the addiction/mental health equation.
  • Participants will be able to utilize three tools to prevent high-risk behavior or reduce harm.

Content Level:
All Levels.

  • Beginning level courses introduce learners to a content area; include information about a condition, treatment method, or issue; and involve learning and comprehending content.
  • Intermediate level courses provide information that builds on knowledge practitioners with some experience already have. These courses focus on skill-building or adding knowledge, possibly following a brief overview of basic information, and involve using information in concrete situations and understanding the underlying structure of the material.
  • Advanced level courses provide content for participants who have been working in the content area and have a clear understanding of the issues. These courses cover and address the complexities involved in the work and involve synthesizing material to create new patterns or structures or evaluating material for a specific purpose.

Earn 1.5 Continuing Education Hours (CEs)

To earn a CE Certificate for viewing this webinar, you must view the webinar in its entirety, pass the CE quiz, and complete the online survey evaluation.

Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $25 processing fee to access the quiz.

A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.

Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print. All certificates will be stored in the NAADAC Education Center under your profile name.
