The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Office of Disability Integration and Coordination joins the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities during Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month for the “Innovations in Inclusive Emergency Management” webinar.

For people with disabilities, fully recovering from a disaster often depends on whether those who lead response and recovery efforts understand their needs.

The Director of FEMA’s Office of Disability Integration and Coordination (ODIC) Sherman Gillums, Jr. will discuss how FEMA strives to markedly shorten the disaster cycle for all people with disabilities long before a disaster occurs, in the preparation and planning phases. He will also share the 14 potential areas of inequity for which people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) should be prepared in the event of a disaster.

Speakers from Ohio, New York, and Alabama State developmental disabilities councils will present about their experiences with recent train derailments, record snowstorms, and more.

Share your stories and questions about working effectively with state and federal agencies to address the needs of people with disabilities in emergencies.
