Description:
Toni Iacolucci and Peggy Ellertsen, members of the strategic committee of HLAA’s Communication Access in Health Care program (CAHC), will discuss barriers and solutions to ensuring that patients can communicate safely and accurately in all medical encounters. They will be joined by Steve Gordon, Coordinator for Civil Rights Enforcement, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia who will address the legal aspects of securing needed accommodations and support for effective communication.

Speakers:

• Assistant United States Attorney Steve Gordon is widely recognized as the driving force behind the Civil Rights Enforcement Program for the Eastern District of Virginia. Pursuing civil rights enforcement cases and engaging in extensive community outreach, Steve works on approaches to enhancing ADA compliance.
• Peggy Ellertsen is a past member of HLAA’s national Board of Directors and former coordinator for the HLAA Boston Chapter. She is a life member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). As a member of HLAA’s CAHC strategic committee, she is especially interested in increasing patient empowerment through education about barriers to access that commonly exist within health care systems.
• Toni Iacolucci is a communication access advocate, former HLAA national board member, and currently serves on the HLAA-NYC Board of Directors. Instrumental in bringing communication access to healthcare facilities, she is co-author of the widely disseminated Guide for Effective Communication in Health Care. Toni currently serves on the strategic committee of HLAA’s CAHC program.
