Courts nationwide grapple with the challenges of providing or allowing a “support person” as an ADA accommodation—an issue that can become complicated and even contentious. When implemented properly, a support person can effectively ensure access to justice for court users with a range of disabilities, including mental health conditions, learning disabilities, brain injuries, ADHD, and autism. Success hinges on careful planning: selecting the right individual, assessing access and functional needs, and preserving the integrity of court proceedings and programs. Join us to explore strategies for putting this accommodation into practice—insights that will help align championing initiatives with court practices.
