Description:
This 90-minute Fair Housing Accessibility FIRST (FHAF) training provides a detailed overview of Requirement 2 of the Fair Housing Act, which addresses accessibility in public and common-use areas. Participants will learn how the Accessibility Guidelines and the Fair Housing Act Design Manual define covered exterior and interior spaces, including onsite amenities, community facilities, and personal hygiene care rooms, as well as the technical standards that ensure these areas are usable by residents and guests with disabilities. The session highlights common design considerations, typical compliance challenges, and strategies for integrating accessible routes and features early in project planning. Practical examples help clarify how Requirement 2 applies across a range of site and building types. An accessibility Subject Matter Expert (SME), Eric Contreras, will be available during the dedicated Q&A portion to answer design and construction accessibility questions.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to identify the design and construction guidance provided for Fair Housing Act Requirement 2 within the Fair Housing Accessibility Guidelines and the Fair Housing Act Design Manual (FHADM), identify the history and protections of the Fair Housing Act (FHA), identify the type of public and common use areas covered under Requirement 2, identify onsite facilities covered under Requirement 2, identify interior facilities covered under Requirement 2, and identify the personal hygiene care spaces covered under Requirement 2.
