Equity for All: Practice Innovation through Accessible Design
Tuesday, April 4, 2023
1:00 -2:30 pm, Eastern Time
Description:
This webinar is provided by Texas Society of Architects, in conjunction with the Great Plains ADA Center. It will have Sign Language and Real-Time Captioning.
Through this informative and interactive panel session, attendees examine their own perspectives of accessible design through the lenses of implicit bias, inclusiveness, and universal design. These nationally renowned panelists are delving into the inherent and often unrecognized personal, organizational, and educational biases in the regulatory, cultural, architectural, and sociological applications of accessible design. With implicit bias as the main theme, the participants are given the opportunity to examine long-standing and often detrimental attitudes about designing to the minimum standards and about the impact of ableism on their firm, clients, projects, and the facility end-users. The program includes provocative deliberation on the deficiency of a national mandatory accessible design standard in the education, examination, and licensing for students, interns, designers, and architects.
As an interactive session, the panelists will take questions directly from the participants. The panelists offer more than 90 years of combined experience including advocacy, education, regulatory and public service, architecture and directing the national technical standards for accessible design.
Panelists:
Lex Frieden, Professor of Biomedical Informatics | Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Health Science Center at Houston
Robin Jones, Director of the Great Lakes ADA Center | Instructor at the University of Illinois at Chicago

Our panelists, moderated by Ricardo León, Assoc. AIA, will share insights and strategies on how to examine accessible design through the lenses of implicit bias, inclusiveness, and universal design. 1.5 LU/HSW has been applied for, and the webinar is free and open for all to attend!
