The highest number of overdose deaths ever recorded in the United States in a year’s time was reported between March 2021 and March 2022. Access to substance use treatment is limited, particularly in rural and predominantly black communities. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been proposed as a potential solution. It can analyze vast amounts of data, create personalized treatment plans, and detect early signs of relapse. However, there are concerns about the use of AI in healthcare due to biases in AI healthcare data, which could perpetuate existing inequality in substance use treatment. This webinar explores the integration of AI in substance treatment and recovery and its impact on racial disparities.


Kaii Marie Robertson, BA and Certified Restorative Therapeutic Yoga Instructor, is a co-founder of the Behavioral Health Mind Body Academy (bhmba), which offers virtual training on substance use, mental health, and wellness. She is also a guest lecturer at Central Piedmont Community College’s Public Safety Leadership Institute.

Shevel Mavins, MS, is the founder of Addiction-Prevention LLC, and co-founder of The Behavioral Health Mind Body Academy where she provides training on substance use, mental health, and wellness. She graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in psychology and attended a dual graduate program in vocational rehabilitation counseling and school counseling. She also earned her Master’s degree in human services with a specialization in counseling studies and addiction and mental health disorders.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to recall impact of AI integration in substance use recovery and its potential benefits in providing personalized treatment plans and timely interventions for individuals with substance use disorders.
  • Participants will be able to analyze the concerns and ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in healthcare, particularly about racial bias and potential disparities in treatment recommendations and resource allocation.
  • Participants will be able to evaluate disparities in substance use treatment and arrest rates among racial communities in the U.S. and assess the role of SUD counselors in mitigating bias when using AI algorithms for treatment plans.

Content Level:
All levels.

Beginning level courses introduce learners to a content area; include information about a condition, treatment method, or issue; and involve learning and comprehending content.

Intermediate level courses provide information that builds on knowledge practitioners with some experience already have. These courses focus on skill-building or adding knowledge, possibly following a brief overview of basic information, and involve using information in concrete situations and understanding the underlying structure of the material.

Advanced level courses provide content for participants who have been working in the content area and have a clear understanding of the issues. These courses cover and address the complexities involved in the work and involve synthesizing material to create new patterns or structures or evaluating material for a specific purpose.

Earn 1.5 Continuing Education Hours (CEs)

To earn a CE Certificate for viewing this webinar, you must view the webinar in its entirety, pass the CE quiz, and complete the online survey evaluation.

Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $25 processing fee to access the quiz.

A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.

Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print. All certificates will be stored in the NAADAC Education Center under your profile name.
