Description:

This presentation explores disability as a vital component of diversity in healthcare education and practice. We examine how ableism impacts patient care and medical education, while highlighting the value healthcare professionals with disabilities bring to medicine. Through the lens of the Stanford Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity (SMADIE), participants will learn practical approaches to creating more inclusive medical environments that benefit all patients and providers. The session emphasizes disability as a form of diversity that enriches healthcare through multiple perspectives and experiences.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize Ableism in Healthcare: Identify common manifestations of ableism in healthcare settings and their impact on patient outcomes.
  2. Implement Inclusive Practices: Apply specific strategies to create more accessible and equitable healthcare environments for patients and providers with disabilities.
  3. Advance Representation: Describe the unique value and perspective that healthcare professionals with disabilities bring to patient care and medical education.
