Description:
The COVID-19 pandemic challenged the behavioral health workforce to learn how to pivot and utilize flexibility when navigating the training and coaching of its workforce. The concept of pivoting intertwines with another relevant clinical skill: resilience. Resilience is defined by the American Psychological Association (APA) as “the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands (APA, 2012).” As a provider, practicing and teaching this skill to individuals in treatment can be beneficial in supporting recovery while also positively impacting the goal of preserving the lives of those touched by opioid use disorder. This presentation will shed light on the message of hope and healing associated with resilience.

Presenter:
Mary Darden-Robinson, PsyD, LPC, LSATP, MAC, is a licensed professional counselor, holds a certificate as a certified substance use disorder counselor along with a master addiction counselor certificate. She is a human services board-certified practitioner and a licensed substance use disorder treatment practitioner. Additionally, she is SAMHSA GAINS Center-trained as a facilitator for the “How Being Trauma-Informed Improves Criminal Justice System Responses” seminar. Darden-Robinson is also a master trainer for the ACE Interface Program and a certified clinical trauma professional. Lastly, she is a Virginia Board of Counseling approved clinical supervisor for residents in counseling as well as LSATPs, LMFTs, CSACs, and CSAC-A trainees. Darden-Robinson received a Bachelor’s of science in human services counseling, holds a Master’s of arts in community counseling and a is a Doctor of psychology.
