Black History Month and Disability Rights

February 28, 2018
Source: Advancing Opportunities

February is Black History Month, which recognizes important events and people of African descent in American history. The prevalence of disability among African Americans is particularly high. One disability advocacy group founded by an African American is Ramp Your Voice (See: http://rampyourvoice.com/?s=black+history+month), which profiles notable contemporary activists to highlight their lives and accomplishments.

The convergence of the black and disability advocacy movements occurred in 1990 with the founding of the National Black Disability Coalition (See: http://www.blackdisability.org/).

This page on the Advancing Opportunities website recognizes several African Americans with disabilities who made lasting contributions (See: https://advopps.org/black-history-month-prominent-african-americans-disabilities/).
